Nonsurgical Sterilization (Essure Permanent Birth Control System) – This is the first non-surgical method of sterilizing women, and is a procedure that is done in our office. Because it is intended to permanently prevent pregnancy, it is similar to other permanent birth control procedures such as tubal ligation (”having your tubes tied”) or vasectomy.
Essure is a lower impact approach than incisional tubal ligation and is gentler on your body because it can be performed without general anesthesia, does not involve cutting through the skin and recovery is quick.
It can take about three months for the scar tissue to grow, so it is important to use another form of birth control during this time. Then you will have to return to your doctor for a test to see if scar tissue has fully blocked your tubes. Essure has been shown to be 99.8 % effective in preventing pregnancy.
